What’s the pelvic floor?

Male and female CORE muscles

Let’s understand how works the pelvic floor muscles anatomy. The pelvic floor is the group of muscles and connective tissue that is located in the lower part of the pelvis. It supports the space between the lower part of the pubis, the coccyx and the ischions of both women and men.

The pelvic floor musculature is at the bottom of the CORE. By understanding the anatomy we will understand the importance of the pelvic floor muscles.

Did you get lost? Don’t worry! This is not a very familiar part of the body for a lot of people. Anatomy is complicated by itself. The pelvic floor anatomy may seem more confusing since we are not used to seeing representations of it. We should look at the pelvic floor as we see other areas of the human body.

CORE muscles anatomy male and female
The pelvic floor is the bottom muscle of the CORE

Let me try to explain it in a simple way:
Imagine a balloon, a colourful one like those at birthday parties. Imagine that the knot on the balloon is pointing downwards. The musculature of the CORE is very similar to this balloon.
The upper part of the balloon would represent the diaphragm, the muscle under the lungs that help us to breathe. The lateral walls of the balloon would be the transversus abdominis muscle, the natural belt of our abdomen. The rectus abdominis would be in the front. The pelvic floor would be the bottom of the balloon.
Do you visualize it?

The CORE is formed by the diaphragm at the top, the recti in the front, the transverse in the laterals and the pelvic floor muscles at the bottom.

Just like a balloon has a knot, the pelvic floor muscles have an opening. In the case of men, it is the urethra and the anus. Otherwise, in the case of women, the vagina is added to the urethra and the anus as the openings.
What happens if the balloon knot is not tied properly? The air escapes!
The pelvic floor musculature work in the same way:

-If the muscle does not have enough closing force, the increased pressure in the abdomen will cause “leakage”.

-If the knot is too tight nothing will go out even if we push strongly.

Thank to the pelvic floor muscles anatomy we are continent and evacuate properly.

The pelvic floor can be affected by daily situations such as stress or constipation. Both men and women can suffer pelvic floor symptoms such as incontinence or sexual dysfunction. These are very common problems and they are more easily solved if they are treated as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it seems to be difficult to talk about them and find out how to treat them. Luckily, pelvic floor physiotherapy is a great way to solve these problems!

Both men and women can suffer pelvic floor dysfunctions. The musculature needs to be strong and flexible at the same time.

Pregnancy and postpartum are usually the moments when women begin to hear about the pelvic floor. The 9 months of weight gain on the pelvic floor increase the chances of its weakening. This is why it is so important to strengthen the pelvic floor for childbirth. To prepare for the birth it’s important as well to know how to relax the pelvic floor. In the postpartum period, pelvic floor care is going to be a MUST! Whether you have given birth vaginally or by caesarean section you should get your pelvic floor checked up.

In the case of men, pelvic floor problems are usually caused by surgeries such as prostatectomy. However, those who suffer from stress and exercise a lot or not at all can present symptoms. As you see neither extreme is good.

Children who suffer constipation and bedwetting need to do pelvic floor rehabilitation to get rid of these symptoms

As you can imagine after what I have told you, this part of the body deserves much more attention than it receives.
