Should I see a pelvic floor specialist if I have never had children?

Nulliparous women or women who did not give birth should check their pelvic floor muscles too! Let me explain you why.

Thank to the speciality of “women’s health” inside of physiotherapy, pregnant and postpartum women know about the importance of checking their pelvic floor. However, there are other situations in which its important to be assessed by a specialist in the pelvic floor.

Nulliparous women also need to take care of their pelvic floor muscles.

Generally, your doctor is going to recommend physical therapy if you need it. Just in case… these are the most common situations in which you should visit a physio specialized in pelvic floor:

Reasons to visit a pelvic floor specialist in Dubai:

  1. If you have pelvic pain: the pelvic floor can make you feel weird sensations such as heaviness or cramps. Sometimes the pain appears while sitting on a hard surface or after an intense workout. The causes of this type of problem can be multiple. That’s why it is necessary to make a diagnosis and specific treatment for each individual. If you have pain during miction, defecation or sexual intercourse you may also need pelvic floor rehabilitation.
  1. If you have incontinence or leakage of urine. Urinary incontinence during daily activities such as laughing or coughing is often caused by weakness of the pelvic floor. But it can appear due to excessive tension too. That’s why not everyone needs the same exercises! Weakness can be caused by surgeries, impact sports or constipation. Tension can be caused by stress, wrong workouts or a previous injury… Small amounts of urine leaks, if left untreated, can lead to chronic incontinence.
  1. If you have sexual problems: Weakness and stiffness in the pelvic floor also causes sexual problems. . A pelvic floor specialist can help you solve problems related to hypertonic pelvic muscles, such as vaginismuspainful sex (also called dyspareunia) or anorgasmia
  1. If you have constipation: both tension and weakness in the pelvic floor can cause you struggle with bowel movements. If you have tried to change your diet and lifestyle and there’s still no improvement I will highly recommend you to book an appointment.

5. If you suffer from painful menstruations. Pain during yout period is NEVER normal and its something you should check with your gynecologist to find the root cause. If your doctor do not see any problem we can blame the excess of tension in the pelvic floor muscles. (You can read here about how to track your menstruation)

A pelvic floor muscle assessment is an easy procedure even in nulliparous women.

To check your pelvic floor you can choose to do it manually with an internal assessment. Another option is to perform an external ultrasound assessment. I always recommend doing both of them. However, those women who don’t want to get an internal assessment should know that there is the chance of doing externally too with the help of an ultrasound.

Nulliparous women usually see a fast improvement once they star pelvic floor muscles rehabilitation. Ideally, we should prevent any symptoms to appear with pelvic floor care, is never to late to start!

If you have any questions feel free to contact here with your concern and I can indicate to you how to  start with the rehabilitation or if there is another way to solve your problem
