Why is it important to take care of the pelvic floor muscles?

Taking care of your pelvic floor musculature you will prevent and treat several conditions. Wanna know why? The pelvic floor muscles are the bottom part of our CORE musculature, they become activated with every movement that we do in order to keep us stable… or this is how it should be! By learning how to control this group of muscles we will prevent and treat different conditions. The pelvic floor muscles keep the balance, the back stability, the continence, and the intimate life in shape. If there is a problem in the pelvic floor all these different components of our daily life will be affected.

The importance of balanced pelvic floor muscles.

This allows us to avoid problems with urination or bowel movements, and have a happy intimate life avoiding also problems during sexual intercourse. 

If we injured the pelvic floor muscles it’s possible to have problems like pelvic pain or low back pain, because these muscles also stabilize and support the spine.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy for women.

We generally hear about pelvic floor muscle training for pregnant women, and we know that those who work the pelvic floor have faster and easier deliveries. This happens because a balanced pelvic floor musculature prevents tearing during the delivery, and also avoids postpartum problems such as prolapse, urinary incontinence, and low back pain. In addition, working the pelvic floor is necessary to avoid a nonfunctional abdominal diastasis.

Can men have pelvic floor muscles problems?

Men can also suffer pelvic floor dysfunctions related to pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, and sexual problems. These problems generally appear after an oncological process such as a radical prostatectomy, and it’s important to start with a program before the surgery to try to avoid this symptomatology. In certain situations, men are more likely to suffer pelvic floor dysfunctions, for example, those who smoke and practice impact sports should pay more attention to this area. Taking care of the pelvic floor muscles, men will be less likely to suffer pelvic pain, erectile dysfunction, incontinence, and premature ejaculation.

Pediatric pelvic floor care.

The little ones in the house may also need this kind of rehabilitation too! Those kids struggling with keeping the bed dry the whole night are the more benefit from pelvic floor exercises, nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) can be managed in different ways and each family can decide what’s better for their kids. 

Situations like constipation and diverse ways of urinary incontinence can be a real struggle for kids too and sometimes an unbalanced pelvic floor is the key to solve these problems. Kids who need to take care of the pelvic floor muscles will need pelvic floor exercises and biofeedback.
